El sitio Divergences2 —autodenominado ‘revista libertaria internacional’— publica en su número 35 el artículo “‘This Square is Our Home’ – The Organization of Urban Space in the Spanish 15-M Movement”. Se trata de un texto breve que se publicó hace unos años en la revista Progressive Planning y que ve ahora la luz en este foro para una audiencia más amplia.

El trabajo original estaba dirigido a un público bastante más acotado, urbanistas progresistas y asociaciones vecinales en EE.UU., por lo que era muy descriptivo, exponiendo sintéticamente los pasos del movimiento en sus inicios y las que yo consideraba en aquel momento principales oportunidades y potencias para la lectura desde el análisis urbano. Eran las siguientes:

– The possibility and consequences of prolonged occupation of public space and the reorganization of its contents, outside the scope of established institutional codes.

– The relationship of that occupation and organization with the massive use of virtual social networks as a new space for political activism and radical democracy.

– The relationship between these networks and physical spaces and its ability to reshape and re-scale social practices.

– The capacity of people to create new sites and identities related to them; in sum, to rewrite urban landscapes through a commitment to social justice, self-government and the deployment of common capacities, without being controlled by planned organizations or hetero-regulated participatory processes.

Tiempo después preparé una reflexión más extensa sobre el asunto, que debería ver la luz pronto. Mientras tanto, espero que este textito sea de ayuda.
